Edwards Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia’s Anthony Edwards was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday by the league office in Birmingham, Ala.

Edwards averaged 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals in Georgia’s three outings at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational last Monday-Wednesday.

Headlining the trip was a 37-point outburst against No. 3 Michigan State last Tuesday that included 33 points in the second half alone. Edwards helped Georgia rally from a 28-point deficit early in the second half to pull within two points with just under five minutes remaining. His 37-point performance equaled the No. 11 effort in Georgia’s all-time single-game scoring list and represented the most by a Bulldog freshman since Jacky Dorsey scored 41 points versus LSU on Jan. 20, 1975.

Edwards wrapped up the invitational with 24 points against Chaminade on Wednesday, including a buzzer-beating game winner against the Silverswords.

Entering this week, Edwards is ranked No. 2 among the SEC’s scoring leaders at 20.6 points per game. He also is ranked No. 2 in steals (2.3 spg), No. 7 in 3-pointers per game (2.4 3FGpg) and No. 17 in rebounding (5.9 rpg).

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they host North Carolina Central at Stegeman Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. The matchup with the Eagles is one of 14 games Georgia will play this season against teams included in the final edition of Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology on ESPN.com released on Nov. 4.
